On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the normalization of Vietnam–U.S. relations and the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), the Agency of Foreign Trade (Ministry of Industry and Trade), in coordination with the American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (AmCham Vietnam), organized the Vietnam–U.S. Trade Forum 2025 on December 10 in Ho Chi Minh City.
The Forum was held under the theme “30 Years of Economic and Trade Cooperation – Overcoming Challenges, Entering a New Era.” The event took place in the context of Vietnam–U.S. relations continuing to develop positively, becoming increasingly deeper and more substantive, particularly across the pillars of economics, trade, and investment.
After three decades since the normalization of relations and 25 years of implementing the BTA, bilateral trade has grown strongly in both scale and quality, becoming an important driving force for economic growth, job creation, and strengthened supply chain linkages between the two highly complementary economies.
Amid profound adjustments in the global economic and trade landscape, the Forum also candidly discussed emerging challenges, including adjustments in U.S. trade policy, the trend toward increased tariffs and trade remedy measures, as well as rising requirements for technical standards, sustainable development, and supply chain transparency. These developments pose an urgent need to enhance policy dialogue, strengthen mutual trust, and improve coordination capacity in order to maintain and reinforce the foundation of long-term bilateral economic and trade cooperation.
The Forum attracted a large number of participants, including representatives of state management agencies, experts, the business community, and export associations.
In this spirit, the Forum focused on clarifying major cooperation orientations for the coming period in a direction that is more harmonized in interests, balanced, and sustainable; thereby effectively leveraging opportunities arising from the restructuring of global supply chains, while proactively adapting to the rapid changes in the international policy and trade environment.
A highlight of the Forum was an in-depth discussion session on the 30-year economic and trade pillar of Vietnam–U.S. relations, with the participation of policymakers, former chief negotiators of the BTA, experts, and representatives of key industry associations. The presentations provided multi-dimensional perspectives on notable achievements, cooperation prospects, as well as structural issues that need continued attention in the time ahead.
In addition, a roundtable discussion on U.S. trade policy created an open and substantive space for exchange among state management agencies, the business community, and export associations. Discussions focused on analyzing the impacts of tariff policies and trade remedy measures, while proposing solutions to enhance adaptability, diversify markets, and strengthen the competitiveness of Vietnamese enterprises.
As an important policy dialogue channel, the Vietnam–U.S. Trade Forum 2025 contributed to deepening shared understanding and promoting substantive cooperation among stakeholders; thereby expanding cooperation space and reinforcing the foundation for Vietnam–U.S. economic and trade relations to develop in a stable, sustainable, and mutually beneficial manner in the next phase./.
